Aish Technologies, the Poole-based defence systems manufacturer, recently took the opportunity to discuss apprenticeships with HRH The Princess Royal at the annual conference of the Society of Marine Industries (SMI). Princess Anne was the special guest at the Conference and opened the plenary session.
Aish’s Sales and Marketing Director John Atkins is a member of the British Naval Equipment Association’s Council, which is one of the most influential groups that operate within the SMI. John took the opportunity during the Conference to discuss with Her Royal Highness the need for more apprentices and the difficulties companies such as Aish experience in recruiting the highly skilled staff the industry needs.
John comments: “The Princess was very interested to hear about the apprenticeship scheme being run by Aish and how for a relatively small company we currently have 17 apprentices in training across the business, from engineers to HR and IT specialists, with a further intake of 4 due in September this year. The Princess was also interested to learn that Aish had been awarded Dorset apprentice provider of the year 2015, against some very stiff competition”.
The Society of Maritime Industries is a London based trade body that represents the interests of the whole of the UK maritime enterprise. This covers everything from ports and terminals to ship building and even to the operation of leisure craft.
The Society holds an annual conference to bring its members together to meet, network and to discuss topics around the conference theme. This year the theme was entitled “Partners in the Maritime Enterprise” looking at how best industry can support the Royal Navy, through ship building, training, repairs supply chain and support. The conference was held at The Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.
